Heinz baked beans in a jar

Heinz has been selling baked beans in a metal can for the last 124 years in Britain, but next week it will start selling them in a plastic jar.

Heinz is keen to stress that it is not ditching metal cans, but merely trying to encourage families to waste fewer beans with this new design.

In the last year alone, consumers in Britain ate more than 442 million tins of Heinz beans and The Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association felt compelled to issue a statement pointing out that metal tins were the favoured method of packaging beans and soups.

Paula Jordan, marketing director at Heinz, said: “Bean lovers tell us they want to enjoy the best loved beans as they like and in portions that suit them. This new, resealable Fridge Pack does just that. It’s perfect for busy families to tuck into as many Heinz Beanz as they like. It’s just like having your favourite beans on tap.”

This is the not the first time that Heinz has tried out new packaging. Three years ago it introduced the Snap Pot, a little plastic container that could be put straight into the microwave. The company said it sold 9 million of these last year.

The plastic jar, which holds the equivalent of two and half standard tins, will cost about £1.79 at supermarkets, more expensive that the same amount would cost in tins. Heinz beans in tins usually cost the equivalent of £1.30 to £1.50 per kilo.

Heinz first sold its tins of baked beans in the Fortnum & Mason department store in 1886.
